Subject: internet "fairness" sales tax...
It's been a while since we've connected. Wish we were connecting
over something happier or more positive. :/
I'm sure you are aware of the attempts to introduce an online
sales tax in Congress. Obviously the United States Senate passed
"The Marketplace Fairness Act."
This bill attempts to level a perceived unfairness in the
marketplace by forcing online retailers like you and me to
collect and remit sales taxes to every state and
every jurisdiction in the United States. The House of
Representatives will soon vote on whether or not to
make the bill a law.
I have read every word of this bill and it is bad. I'd like to
invite you to join me (and other influential ecommerce companies)
in the fight to stop or change this bill before it's too late.
We want to ensure that any "Marketplace Fairness Act" is actually
fair or that it is defeated altogether.
If this bill passes the house, you and I will be forced to collect
and remit sales taxes for over 9,000 different taxing jurisdictions
all of which have differing tax rates and laws. We will be subject
to audits by 50 different states even though we have no presence,
voting rights or access to political representation in those states.
Finally, we will be forced to charge sales taxes while some of our
competitors will be exempt from the law because it's considered too
"burdensome" for them to comply.
We have joined forces with other online retailers as a group
called "Internet Retailers for Fairness"
http://www.internetretailersforfairness.org/
and I want you to join the cause.
Participation is not public and requires no money and little effort.
I know you are busy. The point of the group is to work together
behind the scenes to get the legislation changed or defeated.
Details are here. We can share resources, form letters, and ideas.
We are up against the powerful retail lobby, Walmart and Amazon,
but we should not underestimate the voice of a small business owner
and the powerful call for fairness.
Our stance is very simple: This bill is unfair. A tax that is so
difficult to comply with, so complex and burdensome, that Congress
has to exempt any business (in this case, businesses selling less
than $1,000,000 per year) from collecting and paying it is a bad
tax and is bad policy.
We oppose the online sales tax in its current form and insist that
if a tax is levied, it should be simple enough that every
company that sells goods online can comply without undue burden.
We will work together to get our message in front of members of
Congress before it's too late. We have a form letter
for all online retailers to use.

This letter was recently sent to Senator Jeff Flake in Arizona. He
responded to our letter and then voted against the bill in the
Senate. We are hopeful that if we can spread the word and contact
members in the House of Representatives, that we can ensure the
bill is either defeated, or fixed to ensure that we are not
discriminated against.

If you'd like me to add you to the private facebook group and
newsletter list, just reply to
m c k a n e @ s c r a p b o o k . c o m
with "add me" and I will make sure you get added.
Thanks for your time. Sorry for the semi-long letter out of the
blue. This legislation came out of the blue too! Please feel free
to forward this message to other internet retailers that you think
might be interested in the cause.
Our time is limited but I really do believe we can get
this changed or defeated...
